What Instrument Should Your Child Start On?

What Instrument Should Your Child Start On?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Victor_Epand]Victor Epand

When you are deciding what instruments to buy for your child, you are facing a very large dilemma. You want to make sure they get instruments that will nurture their creative side, but you don't want to get them something that is going to be so complicated that they quickly lose an interest in playing it. As a result, you are walking a thin line between finding the perfect used instrument that inspires them creatively, and a used instrument that frustrates them immensely.

What instrument should you choose then? Well, here are five suggestions to help make your young musical prodigy into a musical legend.

Guitars

The guitar is by no means an easy instrument to play but it is an instrument that improvement can easily be measured on. From simple chords to Stairway to Heaven, you will be able to help your child gain confidence as they slowly learn the chords of the guitar and begin taking on more complicated songs. It is a universal instrument and one of the most popular in the world.

Drums

If you can handle the noise, this is a great musical instrument for your child. They probably love to hit things with sticks, so this fits right in and once they master making a beat, they will become excellent drummers who will be highly sought after in any band. Plus, used drum kits do not usually cost that much to buy.

Flute

This is the bare bones instrument, that coincidently, was made of bone at one time in our history. It is very easy to learn how to play and they can be bought for a very simple price. You should jump at the chance to turn your child into the next Pied Piper with a flute.

Piano

If you look at most of the world's great rock musicians, they all started out on the piano. That includes Ozzy Osbourne, Paul McCartney and Chris Martin. Once you master the piano, you can master other types of instruments. It is the standard for every child who wants to learn how to play music, and it can launch your child on a new path of musical creativity.

Violin

Like the guitar, it is not the easiest instrument to learn but your progress can be charted pretty easily and once your child learns how to play it, their confidence will go through the roof because only a few people can play the violin well. It is a bit more expensive than other instruments, but if you buy a used one, you should be okay in terms of price.

These are just a few of the instruments you can get your children playing to help them nurture their musical gift and gain self confidence, but they are by no means the only one. It is best to look for the instrument your child will like the most by trying as many as you can. Music is an important part of development, and finding the right instrument for the right child can make all the difference in the world.

The Melodic Sounds of the Trumpet

The Melodic Sounds of the Trumpet
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Victor_Epand]Victor Epand

The trumpet is an instrument that is a member of the brass family, though it has also been referred to as a wind or an aerophone instrument, and has the highest register among all the brass instruments. The trumpet is made out of brass tubing that is narrowest at the mouthpiece and widest at the end.

This particular instrument, like other brass instruments is played by blowing into the mouthpiece through closed lips to create a vibration. The instrument as three keys or piston valves that work to alter the sound produced, often creating a lower pitch. Each valve will lower the sound the trumpet makes as it is pressed down by the musician. There are also different kinds of trumpets that are tuned to different notes. The most common trumpet played is known as the B-flat trumpet. Other types of trumpets that are played but are not as common are the C, D, E, F, G, and A.

Surprisingly enough, the trumpet has been around for a very long time, even if the earlier trumpets did not look like the trumpets people are more familiar with today. The earliest proof of the existence of trumpets goes back as far as 1500 BC, though it is believed that trumpets could have easily existed before this as well.

Another interesting note about the trumpet is that it was not originally used for music. Instead, it was used for signaling purposes for religious ceremonies or military use. It really was not until medieval times that the trumpet started to be used more as a musical instrument instead of being limited to previous purposes. In fact, it was even seen as a special talent, which those who played would keep to themselves because it was regarded as a guarded craft. It was after this time that the trumpet really started to change, as improvements and adaptations were made to have the trumpet keep up with its demands. Even with these improvements, the addition of the valves on the trumpet did not occur until the early to mid 1800s.

It appears that few young people will take up the instrument instead of popular instruments like the guitar and the piano. A common misconception is that it is really simple to play, but the truth is that it can be a little complex. One has to have good control of the air that they blow into the trumpet in order to get the right sound. Some will take an interest in the trumpet because they appreciate its bold and bright sound. It is common in marching bands, in the military and is also common in schools.

It is a relatively inexpensive instrument to play in comparison to others, so school bands will sometimes be able to teach students who want to learn it. Its drawback for many people is that it does not have a wide range of sounds and many who want to learn how to play an instrument are looking for something that can create a variety of different sounds.

Different Kinds of Music Gear

Different Kinds of Music Gear
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Victor_Epand]Victor Epand

A musical instrument or a music gear is a device constructed or modified with the purpose of making music. In principle anything that, produces sound, and can somehow be controlled by a person playing it, can serve as a musical gear. The expression, however, is reserved generally for items that have a specific musical purpose. The academic study of musical instruments is called organology. The different kinds of music gears include guitar, piano, drums, synthesizer, flute and the list is endless.

Bass Guitar

Bass guitar is a stringed instrument played with the fingers either by plucking, slapping, popping, tapping or using a pick. Bass guitar has a large body, long neck.

Piano

The piano is a musical instrument played by means of a keyboard. It produces sound by striking steel strings with felt hammers that immediately rebound allowing the string to continue vibrating at its resonance frequency. These vibrations are transmitted through the bridges to the soundboard, which amplifies them. The piano is widely used in Western music for solo performance, chamber music, and accompaniment. It is also very popular as an aid to composing and rehearsal. Although not portable and often expensive, the versatility and ubiquity of the piano have made it one of the most familiar musical instruments. It is sometimes classified as both a percussion and a string instrument.

Accordion

An accordion is a musical instrument of the handheld bellows driven free reed aerophone family, sometimes referred to as squeeze boxes. The accordion is played by compression and expansion of a bellows, which generates air flow across reeds. A keyboard or buttons control, which reeds receive air flow and therefore the tones produced. Modern accordions consist of a body in two parts, each generally rectangular in shape, separated by a bellows. On each part of the body is a keyboard containing buttons, levers or piano style keys. When pressed, the buttons travel in a direction perpendicular to the motion of the bellows.

Synthesizer

A synthesizer is generally any kind of electronic musical instrument, or electronic device capable of producing or manipulating audio tones, such as musical notes, through audio signal processing. The term originates from the Greek word syntithetai. Synthesizers work by manipulating electrical signals, which appear as sound when they are used to drive audio amplifiers. These tones are generated by electrical circuits which may work by manipulating a signal through a series of oscillators and filters in an analog circuit.

Flute

The flute is a musical instrument of the woodwind family. Unlike other woodwind instruments, a flute is a reed less wind instrument that produces its sound from the flow of air against an edge, instead of using a reed. In its most basic form, a flute can be an open tube which is blown like a bottle. There are several broad classes of flutes. With most flutes, the musician blows directly across the edge of the mouthpiece. However, some flutes, such as the whistle, gemshorn, flageolet, recorder, tin whistle, tonette, fujara, and ocarina have a duct that directs the air onto the edge. These are known as fipple flutes. The fipple gives the instrument a distinct timbre which is different from non fipple flutes and makes the instrument easier to play, but takes a degree of control away from the musician.

Children's Musical Instruments and Baby Musical Toys

Children's Musical Instruments and Baby Musical Toys
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Christine_Gora]Christine Gora

While it is now generally accepted that music is important for the development of babies and young children, many parents are confused by the array of musical toys, instruments and recordings that are available in the market place. Musical instruments shall be discussed here.

The percussion family
There are a number of musical instruments generally from the percussion family that are suitable for little ones. Percussion instruments are defined as those instruments that are shaken, scraped or struck with a beater or mallet. There are two kinds of percussion instruments: tuned and un-tuned. Tuned percussion instruments are correctly pitched enabling the playing of melodies. The piano is a tuned percussion instrument as are electronic keyboards and instruments with bars such as xylophones and glockenspiels and individual tone or resonator bars. By far the majority of percussion instruments are un-tuned and some examples include maracas or shakers, triangles, jingle bells and tambourines and drums.

What is best for baby?
It is important that babies are provided with musical toys and instruments that are age appropriate. Adult musical instruments can often be unsuitable. Size really does matter. For example a large pair of Latin wooden maracas would not be suitable for a young baby as they are too heavy and cannot be easily manipulated. Strong sounds may also startle babies. There are however many types of mini maracas or baby maracas that are lightweight with a delicate sound, have easy grasp handles and are safe and washable. They provide visual stimulation as well with lots of bright, colourful beads that are safely enclosed. This is an important consideration as all children under one year will put everything in the mouth. Halilit produce some beautiful mini maracas for babies as well as lovely rainbow rain shakers in small sizes. They also have a mini sea drum with beads and a lovely sea pattern.

Care needs to be taken when selecting bells. All bells have jingles and small parts that can be a choking hazard. Bells should only be used under supervision with little ones. There is however a completely safe bell for babies produced by Kindermusik where the jingles are enclosed in cloth. These bells are attached to Velcro and can be wrapped around wrists and ankles.

Appealing to young children
Babies and young children learn through all the senses. Musical toys and musical instruments should be appealing in many ways. They should not only sound great but should be visually attractive with good design and bright colours. They should also feel good to play and encourage active playing. They are not just for looking at. Good quality musical instruments can withstand vigorous use. Many toy drums for example can be five minute wonders but a sturdy drum with a natural skin head or quality synthetic head can give years of enjoyment. Remo produce some beautiful children's drums from the delicious looking lollipop to jungle patterned toms, djembes, and bongos.

Quality and price
Good quality can often mean paying considerably more. This is the case not only with drums but certainly with xylophones and glockenspiels. Sonor produce a glockenspiel with precision tuning and an incredibly beautiful sound that is built to last for years. In comparison many cheap barred instruments have a tinny, dull, highly inaccurate pitch. But quality can also come at bargain basement prices if you know what to look for and where to look. Many examples can be found with wooden toys and wooden musical instruments such as castanets, tone blocks, spinning crackers and recorders.

Everything You Need to Know About Classical Music Gear

Everything You Need to Know About Classical Music Gear
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Victor_Epand]Victor Epand

Classical music is a broad term that usually refers to music produced in, or rooted in the traditions of, Western art, or ecclesiastical and concert music, in the period from the 9th century to the 21st century. The central norms of this tradition became codified between 1550 and 1900, which is known as the common practice period.

Classic music is still played by many of today's musicians. European classical music is largely distinguished from many other non-European and popular musical forms by its system of staff notation, in use since about the 16th century.

Classical and popular music are often distinguished by their choice of instruments. The instruments used in classical music were mostly invented before the middle of the 19th century. Some of them had been designed even earlier, and codified in the 18th and 19th centuries. They consist of the instruments found in an orchestra, together with a few other solo instruments such as the piano, harp, accordion, and organ.

The great majority of classical music gear fall into six major categories - bowed strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, keyboard, and the guitar family. The first four form the basis of the modern symphony orchestra.

The classical guitar was originally a Spanish-derived, six-stringed instrument. It is played using a plectrum or the finger-nails, with frets set into the fingerboard. Popular music tends to use amplification for both the six-stringed instruments and the four-string bass guitar. The guitar family gradually supplanted the lute which had come to prominence during the Renaissance.

The piano is widely used in Western music for solo performance, chamber music, and accompaniment. It is also very popular as an aid to composing and rehearsal. Although not portable and often expensive, the piano's versatility and ubiquity have made it one of the most familiar musical instruments.

The piano is sometimes classified as both a percussion and a string instrument. In the period from about 1790 to 1860, during the Mozart-era, piano underwent tremendous changes, which led to the modern form of the instrument. Early technological progress owed much to the English firm of Broadwood, which already had a reputation for the splendor and powerful tone of its harpsichords.

The accordion is played by compression and expansion of a bellows, which generates air flow across reeds. A keyboard or buttons control which reeds receive air flow and therefore determine the tones produced. The accordion's basic form was invented in Berlin in 1822 by Friedrich Buschmann. The accordion is one of several European inventions of the early 19th century that used free reeds driven by a bellows.

The violin is a bowed string instrument with four strings tuned in perfect fifths. It is the smallest and highest-pitched member of the family of string instruments, which also include the viola and cello. The oldest documented violin to have four strings, like the modern violin, was made in 1555.

Significant changes occurred in the shape and structure of the violin in the 18th century, particularly in the length and angle of the neck, as well as in the bass bar. Most of the old violins have undergone these modifications, and hence are in a significantly different shape than their forerunners, undoubtedlys with differences in sound and response.
